City Has Lowest Damage Cost On Fire Disaster
Tuesday - March 29, 2005 (GMT+8)

Baguio City Fire Marshall Senior Inspector Constantine Supanga said the city had the lowest damage cost on fire disaster as of the year 2004.

Supanga said out of the 67 fire incidents which occurred in the city, the damage cost only amounted to P1.7 million pesos, which is considered very minimal. He added this could be attributed to the quick response of the fire fighting team. airplane games

And to be able to maintain a positive record, Supanga said the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) regularly conducts inspections on different establishments including commercial buildings, residential houses, and different schools within the city to make sure that owners comply with the requirements on safety measures in cases of fire. These inspections resulted to the discovery of seven establishments that are considered fire hazards, which they recommended for closure. These include the Maharlika Rooftop and the Agrix building along Bokawkan Road and Magsaysay Avenue. On the other hand, the Baguio City Public Market was recommended for wiring corrections.

Aside from inspections, civil drills and 14 trainings for barangay disaster volunteers were conducted to increase the readiness of citizens especially among students who might be caught in the middle of their classes if disaster breaks.

Patrol 117, an emergency line, works hand in hand with the BFP to ensure a more efficient dispatch of responses.

BFP Regional Director Senior Superintendent Jacinto C. Diquatco, said with problems like the lack of sufficient equipment and personnel, their office makes up by strengthening education and information activities. He said knowing the basics of preventing fires are a big help. “Walang lalaking sunog kung maliit pa lang ay maaagapan na (a big fire will not occur if it is taken care of while it is small)” he added.

With the “knowledge as key” concept, he said icons Kapitan Tanggol and Berong Bombero were launched and popularized as active agents of society. They are the ones who conduct seminars and lectures to make learning about fire prevention fun and interesting for students at the elementary level. –Liezel Bolong (UC-BCF / PIA intern)
