BAGUIO CITY Members of the city council have unanimously approved a proposed resolution thanking the organizers of the 17th Joselito S. Tengco (JST) Golf Classic for staging it here last February 2 & 3.
The councils Committee on Youth Welfare and Sports Development chaired by councilor Leonardo Bayan, Jr. recommended the measure's approval.
Authored by Federico Mandapat, Jr., the resolution disclosed that around 94 par busters, mostly from Metro Manila, joined the two-day sporting event, bringing along with them their respective families.
The resolution pointed out that the JST Golf Classic used to be conducted in Metro Manila during the past 15 years and has attracted hundreds of golf enthusiasts and that for the past two years, the classic has been held here in Baguio.
The measure revealed that the golf event's organizers were considering the change of venue due to the alleged meningococcemia scare. But after consultations with concerned city officials who assured them that the city is now and has always been safe, the organizers decided to proceed with the event here.
The original version of the resolution also called for the declaration of the period from January 31 to February 3 this year as JST Golf Classic Week, but councilor Edilberto Tenefrancia suggested that since the activity is now over, it would be better if the declaration be made for next year's staging should the organizers decide to hold the event here once again.
He added that the organizers should also be encouraged to stage the golf event in the city every year. The august body agreed to both amendments.
The resolution also points out that the holding of the 17th JST Golf Classic here has helped the city recover from the meningococcemia scare.
