Mayor Wants Heightened Iec On Hiv-aids
by Aileen P. Refuerzo
Wednesday - March 16, 2005 (GMT+8)

BAGUIO CITY – “The city has to embark on pro-active programs on HIV-AIDS (Human Immuno Virus-Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) Awareness and Prevention in the light of recent pronouncements by UN (United Nations) experts that all the ingredients of an AIDS epidemic are now present in Philippine society.”

Mayor Braulio Yaranon bared this last Monday as he called on the Baguio AIDS Watch Council (AWAC) to wage an information and education campaign in the grassroots.

The mayor in a letter asked AWAC chair Dr. Charles Cheng “to convene the AWAC soonest to prepare a plan for an Information and Education Campaign (IEC) on HIV-AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases that will be implemented continuously in the barangays and other sectors of the city.”

He also asked Cheng to include in the plan the needed equipment and supplies for the campaign for possible funding by city council action.

The mayor designated mediaman Willy Cacdac, a founding member of the AWAC, as his representative to the AWAC meetings and other activities.
