No Increase In Tax Charges For Small Businesses

BAGUIO CITY- The city government will not increase tax charges for small business due to the economic showdown caused by the Meningococcemia scare.

Mayor Braulio Yaranon last Tuesday directed the city treasurer’s office to retain the gross sales of small business to the 1994 level to avert an increase in tax charges.

The respite from tax rate hike will allow businessmen still reeling fro the slump in sales to recover their losses, according to the chief executive.

Earlier, the Baguio Market Vendors Association (BAMARVA) asked the Mayor to defer the implementation of a 10 to 20 percent increase in the computation of their gross sales until they have recovered from business shortfall.

“The city government should extend help to small business during these times of crises because it is in the public interest to do so”, the Mayor noted in his Administrative Order No. 007 adding that “there is no valid reason to increase business taxes during these times of difficulty”.

“Unless a voluntary increase in the computation of gross sales is submitted by the businessmen concerned, the city treasurer is hereby directed not to increase the declaration of gross sales of the small businessmen in the city as computed for the year 2004,” the Mayor said.
