Nine Areas Seen As ICT Hubs
Wednesday - March 30, 2005 (GMT+8)

A total of nine provinces and cities have been identified by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the private sector as potential information and communication technology (ICT) hubs in the country. These are the provinces of Leyte, Camaries Sur, Pangasinan, and the cities of Iloilo, Baguio, Davao, Zamboanga, General Santos, and Cagayan de Oro. free property listing

DTI Assistant Secretary for Regional Operations Carissa P. Cruz said these potential ICT hubs will join Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao, the three ICT centers identified by the National Telecommunications Commissions (NTC) based on their ability to provide high-speed network and connectivity.

The locations were chosen based on criteria set by the DTI and its industry association partner, the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP). BPAP is the industry’s group of outsourcing players in the country.

The criteria include: telecommunication infrastructure; quality of the local educational system; real estate considerations such as availability of office buildings, office spaces, and empty lots; and the area’s power infrastructure.

DTI Undersecretary Thomas G. Aquino said the concentration of ICT companies in pioneer locations such as Metro Manila has resulted in “happy problems” such as aggressive competition for space and workers.

A Board of Investments (BOI) data shows that Metro Manila hosts a total of 60 operating call center firms as of December 2004. The total number of call centers in other metro cities do not even constitute a third of the call center volume in Metro Manila.

Officials from the nine areas presented individual business propositions to potential company locators during a two-day forum held recently in Makati City. The Forum was organized by DTI in line with the government’s thrust to decentralize ICT investments to the regions. –PIA-CAR
