Using Plants to Clean Up the Environment
Malona Alinsug, Biology Instructor at the UP Baguio College of Science, has a passionate dream: To remove the toxic chemicals such as mercury, zinc and cadmium expelled by mines and other industries. To do this she has made a research which proves certain plants (hagonoy weeds, cabbage, pechay and kangkong) can accumulate these chemicals and stabilize them.

Leaves of Chromolaena Odorata (Hagonoy weed)

This lowly weed is a hyperaccumulator. It can readily absorb mercury from mine tailings and convert it into HgS (Mercury Sulfide) which is a stable substance. Nature needs this plant's (and our) helping hand to accelerate the elimination of mercury in the ground (which can remain there for 500 to 1000 years) near gold mining areas such as Balatoc.
