Besides nurses, I believe the United States offers an attractive and a rich market for Philippine caregivers and domestic helpers. Considering its rising unemployment problems and widespread poverty , the Philippine government should negotiate with the U.S. for the latter to allow caregivers and domestic helpers to work here even for a limited period of time, say three years renewable for another three years. Those who may qualify under existing immigration laws may apply for permanent residency or citizenship. In the Chicago area alone, there are many Fil-Ams who need DHs and caregivers, especially for the elderly. Salaries may vary. Live-ins where housing, food, transportation and other needs are provided free may be paid from $800 to $1,000 a month. Others may prefer an hourly rate of, say $8 to $10, 8 hours work per day. The minimum wage varies from state to state. Here in Illinois, the minimum hourly rate is $6.25. There is a need to fill up the job market and there is an abundance of labor supply available in the Philippines. Formal arrangements should be initiated by the Philippines on this issue.
